Description
NY Times from November 16, 1991 had an article about expensive Discmans which were considered good enough to be used in a home stereo. Among other models, article mentions now iconic Sony D-303 (0 in 1991 dollars), JVC XL-P70 (0) and JVC XL-P50 (0). It was noted that, unlike other models, JVC XL-P50/P70 had an optional docking/charging station useful to charge extra batteries when Discman itself is elsewhere. Evidently, not too many folks were willing to pay extra 0 for XL-P70 but eBay is littered with dead XL-P50.More importantly, XL-P50 and XL-P70 have exactly the same laser mechanism as the famous Optimus CD-3400,
certified as "hi-end killer" by Stereophile crowd. CD-3400 was
the one and only Discman designed by Mitsumi, it was also branded as Akai and Grundig. Personally, I respectfully disagree with Stereophile over-statements but since the only special thing about CD-3400 is its Mitsumi CD-ROM laser I hunted down quite a few RadioShack, Akai, and Grundig Discmans from 1991-1994. None of them had the same laser! But folks at Victor Co. must have listened and designed their own Discman around upgraded Mitsumi CD-ROM. "Upgrade" involves strengthening plastic case by gluing a piece of acrylic to its bottom :-)
Please note that CompuLink jack is NOT a digital-out, but just a proprietary remote control link between different JVC boxes
Discman was completely refurbished, recapped and re-calibrated. Damaged traces and via fixed, cheap volume pot (same as used in CD-3400) substituted for the one from ALPS
Discman in MINT condition and plays like new again, supplied antivibration plate has the same design as the one recommended by Stereophile for CD-3400
Plays 80+min CD-R and scratch-test CD without any problems. Please consider photos as part of description, ask questions BEFORE placing a bid
