The turbine car, which Chrysler produced from 1962 to 1964 was the first and only consumer test of gas turbine-powered cars. Bodied by Ghia in Turin, Italy, the turbine car was a stylish experiment. Chrysler claimed the turbine could be run on “everything from peanut oil to Chanel No. 5,” a claim that Adolfo López Mateos, the president of Mexico, tested by successfully running one of the first cars on tequila.
After a trial period, all of the 55 turbine cars were collected and all by Chrysler, and all but nine were destroyed. The turbine car was the high point of a three-decade project—ended in 1977—to perfect the turbine engine for practical use.
Jay Leno owns one of the last three turbine cars that are operational.
